A native of Tennessee, he came to this area from Eastern Oregon, purchased a farm at Aumsville in 1925 and came to Salem in 1950. He was a member of Court Street Christian Church. He lived at 430 Ford Street, SE. Survivors are widow, Bernice; sons, Sheldon of Lake Oswego, Robert of Eureka, Calif., and Kenneth of Albany; daughters, Yvonne Armstrong and Jeanne Francisco, both Salem, Cleo Lee, Turner, and Ernestine Durham, Olympia, Wash.; brothers, George of Healdsburg, Calif., and Paul of Wykenburg, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. 163	Steven "Steve" Humphrey (June 26, 1959 – August 19, 1973) was the younger son of Dr. Ben K. Humphrey and Dr. Evelyn "Marty" Martindale Humphrey of Rupert, Idaho. Born in Rupert, Idaho, Steve spent his childhood in the close-knit Minidoka County community where his parents practiced medicine. At the time of his death, he was 14 years old and preparing to enter the ninth grade at Minico High School. He lived with his family in Rupert and shared in their interests in aviation, ranching, and outdoor recreation. In August 1973, Steve accompanied his parents and older brother Brian on a family trip that included a vacation in Canada and time at the family's Flying B Ranch in central Idaho. On August 19, 1973, while returning from the ranch, the family's private aircraft crashed in the rugged mountains near the Flying B Ranch in the Salmon National Forest. A forest patrol plane later located the wreckage after spotting smoke from the crash site. All four members of the Humphrey family aboard the aircraft perished. Steve was survived by his grandfather, Melvin Martindale of Rupert, and his half-brothers, Michael Humphrey of Boston, Massachusetts, and Russel Humphrey, who was participating in an educational trip in Holland at the time of the tragedy. Funeral services for Steve, his brother Brian, and their parents were held on August 23, 1973, at the First Christian Church in Rupert, Idaho, with the Rev. Sydney Gaither officiating. 168	The History of the Merriman Family by Dr. Elijah Merriman published in 1898 pg. 25-29 Micajah Merriman (1788 - 1827) "Micaiah, the fifth son of William the second, married Anna McCoy; they were the parents of seven children, Ruth, Hannah, Rachel, Eleanor, Maria, Elizabeth and Micaiah. Micaiah died in 1827, his was the first death in his father's family. Ruth married Jacob Souers; they are the parents of five children, Elizabeth Ann, Micaiah, Mary Ellenor, Sarah Rebecca and Xantha. Elizabeth Ann married Jonathan Whitelock, of Huntington county, Indiana, and they are the parents of one son, Judge O.W.Whitelock, of Huntington. Judge Whitelock married Miss Jennie Maud Nottingham. They are parents of four children, Wilfred J., Mary Etta, Clarence J., and Charles N. Micaiah married Margaret L. Rittenhouse. To this union there is nine children living, Mary Levona, Icelona, John E., Viola, Jacob M., James, Ella, Ann and Gertie. Mary Elleanor married Benjamin Funderberg, and is the mother of four children, Rosa, Edward, Lillie and Elizabeth. Merriman, of Washington township, Whitley county, Indiana, in 1845, where they purchased wild land and settled upon it. She was left a widow shortly after settling in Indiana, and was afterwards married to Isaac Shinneman, of Columbia City, Indiana. From this union there are three children living, David L., John F., and Ratie. David L., married Charlene Davis; they are parents of four children, Claud, Percy, Laura and Harry. John F., has his second wife. He and David L., are residents of Columbia City, Indiana. Ratie married Mr. Clark, of Hampton, Iowa, and lives in that city. She has one son, called John. Eleanor married Martin Bethcal, now a resident of Washington township, Whitley county, Indiana. She died of consumption, in early life, leaving three daughters, Melissa, Anna and Mary Ellen. Melissa married Huggintubler; she died of consumption shortly after her marriage. Anna married David First and is a resident of Huntington, Indiana. Mary Ellen married M.S.Tracy; to this union there is one son living, named Alva; she now lives in Arizona. Maria married Bezeleel Tracy; they were pioneers of Whitley county, and now residents of Huntington, Indiana. Elizabeth married Elias Numbers; to this union was born Samantha, who married Thomas Thompson, Tobias Numbers, Enos Numbers, Anna who married Elijah Johnson and Ida who married Jacob Sharp. Samantha and Enos live at Mt. Eaton, Ohio, Tobias at Canton, Ohio. The others live in Ohio. Elizabeth Numbers died many years ago in Huntington county, Indiana. Micaiah married Martha Hixon, they are the parents of eight sons. Hixon Newton A., Wayland, Jacob, James D., Orlando, George and Bezeleel. Orlando and George died in early madhood. Hixon is a resident of Marion, Indiana. He has a son, Eugene, who is superintendant of the public schools of east Chicago. Newton A. owns and occupies his fathers farm, near Majenica, Huntington county, Indiana. Wayland owns and occupies a farm adjoining Majenica, Indiana. Jacob is a resident of North Webster, Indiana. HENRY, was born in 1813 in Sevier County, Tenn., where she was reared. She is the second of nine children of Allen and Elizabeth (McSPADDEN) BRYAN. Her father had five children by a former wife, Elizabeth HUBBARD. He represented Sevier County several years, and was a prominent farmer and citizen. Our subject's mother was born of Irish stock, while her husband had Scotch blood mixed with the same origin. Mrs. HENRY was married in 1831. MR. HENRY was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth HENRY, the former a prominent farmer and citizen of Blount County, born in Virginia, but a resident of Tennessee since childhood. Both were of Irish origin. Our subject's husband was a self-made man, educated by reading and study at home. He began for himself when of age, and at twenty-two married, and engaged at Louisville in merchandising for seventeen years. He then purchased and moved to a farm north of Knoxville, and lived there five years, when he moved back to Mrs. HENRY's present home. He was State senator from the Blount County District from 1843 to 1850, and from the Knox County District from 1851 to 1852. He was candidate for re-election when sickness compelled him to resign. He made a splendid record as president of the Senate, one term, and was reported to be a natural politician and one of the best financiers in Tennessee, as was evidenced by his ease in gaining wealth and his invariable success. He was a remarkable reader and close student. Their only child is Elizabeth J., formerly Mrs. JACKSON, but after her husband's death, about 1862, became Mrs. Dr. J. A. BOND. Mrs. HENRY, now seventy-three years old, has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, since her sixteenth year. Her husband was a professed Christian, but a member of no denomination. Merriman 1856-1903 son of John McCoy Merriman 1819–1903 and Harriet Gaddis 1829–1905 "Referring to a history of the Merriman family, we find that while the colonies were young, two Merriman brothers came to cast their lot in the new world. One was lost to descendants, but the other, William Merriman, settled in Baltimore, and from him descended the family of Merrimans, which is now one of the large ones of the United States. Upon recent reunions hundreds have gathered together, all tracing their lineage back to the gentleman mentioned. To this William Merriman, four sons and two daughters were born, William, George, Delilah, Kesiah, Nicholas, and Micaiah. It is believed others were in the family, but the record shows only those mentioned. To William, who is designated as the second, and who is the immediate great-grandfather of our subject, eight children were born, John, Daniel, William, known as the third, Elijah, Micaiah, Elisha, Sarah, and Elizabeth. William, the second, was born in Baltimore, in 1756 and died in Wayne county, Ohio, in 1844. He had married Elizabeth Goodin and went to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where he was widely known as a wise money maker. Later, about 1815, he took his family to Wayne county, Ohio. He was a vigorous man until his death. Elijah Merriman, the son of William the Second, and the grandfather of our subject, married Miss Mary McCoy, and they became the parents of eleven children, Mahalah, Sarah, James M., William B., John M., Thomas, Elijah Merriman, the son of William the sec- John M., the father of Judson J. Merriman, married Harriet Geddis and their children are mentioned in the earlier portion of this article. Harriet Geddis came from a strong Scotch family and her father served in the Mexican war. The Merriman family has always been one of farmers and mechanics and professional men. None have sought public life or personal preferment in politics, but they are known as stanch and substantial people of worth and integrity. Our subject has followed in the lines of his ancestors and is a pioneer, having assisted materially in opening this part of Washington. He has good repute of all and is a descendant of the old Merriman stock of which all may be proud, and has kept untarnished the name of his forefathers as they bequeathed it to him." ----------------------------------------------- He (William) secured a license to have and operate a tavern in Union town in 1802. In 1815 he began selling the properties he had acquired there and migrated with the families of his married children and with other relatives and neighbors to virgin lands which they bought from the federal government. William was able to buy 640 acres in Wayne County, in East Union and Salt Creek Twps, Ohio and this he divided equally giving 80 acres to each of his children. He had the misfortune to lose his wife in 1830. 172	Written by GGGG granddaughter: Angie Raspone Elizabeth Ann Adams was the daughter of William H. Adams and Anna Todd. She was born September 7, 1818 in Madison, Missouri. Elizabeth married Simeon Toney Thornton October 11, 1838 at Fayette, Howard County, Missouri, USA. Together they had 6 children all born in DeKalb County, Missouri. The children are as follows: James William Thornton (1839-1925), Anna Elizabeth Thornton Stephens (1842-1925), Isaac Agee Thornton (1844-1922), John T. Thornton (1847-1923) Surrilda J. Thornton Ballard (1849-1935) and Benjamin Franklin Thornton (1851-). Elizabeth and Simeon started on the Oregon Trail with all 6 children, the youngest only a year old, in 1852. While still traveling on the trail, but after they had arrived in the Oregon Territory (near present day Heppner, Morrow Co., Oregon), Betsy went into labor and died during a difficult delivery on September 9, 1852 at the age of 34. Sherman R. Barry, 79, a resident of the Salem and Aumsville areas for 50 years, died Friday in a Salem hospital.
A native of Tennessee, he came to this area from Eastern Oregon, purchased a farm at Aumsville in 1925 and came to Salem in 1950. He was a member of Court Street Christian Church. He lived at 430 Ford Street, SE.
Survivors are widow, Bernice; sons, Sheldon of Lake Oswego, Robert of Eureka, Calif., and Kenneth of Albany; daughters, Yvonne Armstrong and Jeanne Francisco, both Salem, Cleo Lee, Turner, and Ernestine Durham, Olympia, Wash.; brothers, George of Healdsburg, Calif., and Paul of Wykenburg, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Services Monday at Barrick mortuary, Rev., Robert Hayes Mulkey officiating.

Steven "Steve" Humphrey (June 26, 1959 – August 19, 1973) was the younger son of Dr. Ben K. Humphrey and Dr. Evelyn "Marty" Martindale Humphrey of Rupert, Idaho.

Born in Rupert, Idaho, Steve spent his childhood in the close-knit Minidoka County community where his parents practiced medicine. At the time of his death, he was 14 years old and preparing to enter the ninth grade at Minico High School. He lived with his family in Rupert and shared in their interests in aviation, ranching, and outdoor recreation.

In August 1973, Steve accompanied his parents and older brother Brian on a family trip that included a vacation in Canada and time at the family's Flying B Ranch in central Idaho. On August 19, 1973, while returning from the ranch, the family's private aircraft crashed in the rugged mountains near the Flying B Ranch in the Salmon National Forest. A forest patrol plane later located the wreckage after spotting smoke from the crash site. All four members of the Humphrey family aboard the aircraft perished.

Steve was survived by his grandfather, Melvin Martindale of Rupert, and his half-brothers, Michael Humphrey of Boston, Massachusetts, and Russel Humphrey, who was participating in an educational trip in Holland at the time of the tragedy.

Funeral services for Steve, his brother Brian, and their parents were held on August 23, 1973, at the First Christian Church in Rupert, Idaho, with the Rev. Sydney Gaither officiating. Interment followed in Rupert Cemetery.

"Micaiah, the fifth son of William the second, married Anna McCoy; they were the parents of seven children, Ruth, Hannah, Rachel, Eleanor, Maria, Elizabeth and Micaiah. Micaiah died in 1827, his was the first death in his father's family. Ruth married Jacob Souers; they are the parents of five children, Elizabeth Ann, Micaiah, Mary Ellenor, Sarah Rebecca and Xantha. Elizabeth Ann married Jonathan Whitelock, of Huntington county, Indiana, and they are the parents of one son, Judge O.W.Whitelock, of Huntington. Judge Whitelock married Miss Jennie Maud Nottingham. They are parents of four children, Wilfred J., Mary Etta, Clarence J., and Charles N. Micaiah married Margaret L. Rittenhouse. To this union there is nine children living, Mary Levona, Icelona, John E., Viola, Jacob M., James, Ella, Ann and Gertie. Mary Elleanor married Benjamin Funderberg, and is the mother of four children, Rosa, Edward, Lillie and Elizabeth.
Sarah Rebecca married Lewis McClurg; they are the parents of three children, Emma, Benjamin and Meridith.
Xantha M., married Francis M. King. She is the mother of two children, Dr. Otto U., and Emmitt O.
Hannah, the second daughter, married Reason Souers. She was the mother of five children, Levi, Lewis, Henry Martin, Anna and Margaret E. The last named died in youth.
Levi married Louisa Rittenhouse. They are parents of five children living. Can't get their names.
Lewis married Eveline Johnson. They are the parents of four children living, Benton, Netta, Thomas, and Jefferson.
Henry Martin married Tressie McFadden. They are the parents of one son, a Lawyer, somewhere in Missouri.
Anna married Uriah Herron. She is the mother of four children, Charles, Levi, Fred and the youngest name not known.
Rachel married Jeremiah Merriman; from this union there is a son living, Martin B. Merriman, of Washington township, Whitley county, Indiana, in 1845, where they purchased wild land and settled upon it. She was left a widow shortly after settling in Indiana, and was afterwards married to Isaac Shinneman, of Columbia City, Indiana. From this union there are three children living, David L., John F., and Ratie. David L., married Charlene Davis; they are parents of four children, Claud, Percy, Laura and Harry. John F., has his second wife. He and David L., are residents of Columbia City, Indiana. Ratie married Mr. Clark, of Hampton, Iowa, and lives in that city. She has one son, called John.
Eleanor married Martin Bethcal, now a resident of Washington township, Whitley county, Indiana. She died of consumption, in early life, leaving three daughters, Melissa, Anna and Mary Ellen.
Melissa married Huggintubler; she died of consumption shortly after her marriage. Anna married David First and is a resident of Huntington, Indiana. Mary Ellen married M.S.Tracy; to this union there is one son living, named Alva; she now lives in Arizona.
Maria married Bezeleel Tracy; they were pioneers of Whitley county, and now residents of Huntington, Indiana.
Elizabeth married Elias Numbers; to this union was born Samantha, who married Thomas Thompson, Tobias Numbers, Enos Numbers, Anna who married Elijah Johnson and Ida who married Jacob Sharp. Samantha and Enos live at Mt. Eaton, Ohio, Tobias at Canton, Ohio. The others live in Ohio. Elizabeth Numbers died many years ago in Huntington county, Indiana.
Micaiah married Martha Hixon, they are the parents of eight sons. Hixon Newton A., Wayland, Jacob, James D., Orlando, George and Bezeleel. Orlando and George died in early madhood. Hixon is a resident of Marion, Indiana. He has a son, Eugene, who is superintendant of the public schools of east Chicago. Newton A. owns and occupies his fathers farm, near Majenica, Huntington county, Indiana.
Wayland owns and occupies a farm adjoining Majenica, Indiana. Jacob is a resident of North Webster, Indiana. James D., is a resident of Texas. Bezeleel is a resident of Barbers Mills, Wells county, Ind. Micaiah and his wife are deceased.

"Mrs. S. M. HENRY, widow of the late J. F. HENRY, was born in 1813 in Sevier County, Tenn., where she was reared. She is the second of nine children of Allen and Elizabeth (McSPADDEN) BRYAN. Her father had five children by a former wife, Elizabeth HUBBARD. He represented Sevier County several years, and was a prominent farmer and citizen. Our subject's mother was born of Irish stock, while her husband had Scotch blood mixed with the same origin. Mrs. HENRY was married in 1831. MR. HENRY was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth HENRY, the former a prominent farmer and citizen of Blount County, born in Virginia, but a resident of Tennessee since childhood. Both were of Irish origin. Our subject's husband was a self-made man, educated by reading and study at home. He began for himself when of age, and at twenty-two married, and engaged at Louisville in merchandising for seventeen years. He then purchased and moved to a farm north of Knoxville, and lived there five years, when he moved back to Mrs. HENRY's present home. He was State senator from the Blount County District from 1843 to 1850, and from the Knox County District from 1851 to 1852. He was candidate for re-election when sickness compelled him to resign. He made a splendid record as president of the Senate, one term, and was reported to be a natural politician and one of the best financiers in Tennessee, as was evidenced by his ease in gaining wealth and his invariable success. He was a remarkable reader and close student. Their only child is Elizabeth J., formerly Mrs. JACKSON, but after her husband's death, about 1862, became Mrs. Dr. J. A. BOND. Mrs. HENRY, now seventy-three years old, has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, since her sixteenth year. Her husband was a professed Christian, but a member of no denomination. He died October 26, 1884. He was an able major in the State militia for many years."

"Referring to a history of the Merriman family, we find that while the colonies were young, two Merriman brothers came to cast their lot in the new world. One was lost to descendants, but the other, William Merriman, settled in Baltimore, and from him descended the family of Merrimans, which is now one of the large ones of the United States. Upon recent reunions hundreds have gathered together, all tracing their lineage back to the gentleman mentioned. To this William Merriman, four sons and two daughters were born, William, George, Delilah, Kesiah, Nicholas, and Micaiah. It is believed others were in the family, but the record shows only those mentioned. To William, who is designated as the second, and who is the immediate great-grandfather of our subject, eight children were born, John, Daniel, William, known as the third, Elijah, Micaiah, Elisha, Sarah, and Elizabeth. William, the second, was born in Baltimore, in 1756 and died in Wayne county, Ohio, in 1844. He had married Elizabeth Goodin and went to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where he was widely known as a wise money maker. Later, about 1815, he took his family to Wayne county, Ohio. He was a vigorous man until his death. Elijah Merriman, the son of William the Second, and the grandfather of our subject, married Miss Mary McCoy, and they became the parents of eleven children, Mahalah, Sarah, James M., William B., John M., Thomas, Elijah Merriman, the son of William the sec- John M., the father of Judson J. Merriman, married Harriet Geddis and their children are mentioned in the earlier portion of this article. Harriet Geddis came from a strong Scotch family and her father served in the Mexican war. The Merriman family has always been one of farmers and mechanics and professional men. None have sought public life or personal preferment in politics, but they are known as stanch and substantial people of worth and integrity. Our subject has followed in the lines of his ancestors and is a pioneer, having assisted materially in opening this part of Washington. He has good repute of all and is a descendant of the old Merriman stock of which all may be proud, and has kept untarnished the name of his forefathers as they bequeathed it to him."

He (William) secured a license to have and operate a tavern in Union town in 1802. In 1815 he began selling the properties he had acquired there and migrated with the families of his married children and with other relatives and neighbors to virgin lands which they bought from the federal government. William was able to buy 640 acres in Wayne County, in East Union and Salt Creek Twps, Ohio and this he divided equally giving 80 acres to each of his children. He had the misfortune to lose his wife in 1830. After her death his unmarried daughter Sarah (Sally) kept house for him until his death in 1844 - age 88.

Elizabeth Ann Adams was the daughter of William H. Adams and Anna Todd. She was born September 7, 1818 in Madison, Missouri.

Elizabeth married Simeon Toney Thornton October 11, 1838 at Fayette, Howard County, Missouri, USA. Together they had 6 children all born in DeKalb County, Missouri. The children are as follows: James William Thornton (1839-1925), Anna Elizabeth Thornton Stephens (1842-1925), Isaac Agee Thornton (1844-1922), John T. Thornton (1847-1923) Surrilda J. Thornton Ballard (1849-1935) and Benjamin Franklin Thornton (1851-).

Elizabeth and Simeon started on the Oregon Trail with all 6 children, the youngest only a year old, in 1852. While still traveling on the trail, but after they had arrived in the Oregon Territory (near present day Heppner, Morrow Co., Oregon), Betsy went into labor and died during a difficult delivery on September 9, 1852 at the age of 34.
